On a sultry New York summer day, the streets were thronged with people looking for air. What they found tantalized their taste buds, beckoning them to try a taste of everything.
People were relaxed, enjoying a lunch hour or the end of their work day. As they pressed toward a food stand, no one was rude. There were Asians, Jews, Africans, Cubans, Puerto Ricans; tourists from around the world.
It was a better United Nations. Each person was just looking for some good food. No one was trying to control anyone else’s thinking, choices, or tastes.
Great observation. People living peaceably, regardless of country or culture.

If the politicians would mind their own, we’d be a lot better off.

If only that were true of the politicians. Thoughtful and appropriate.

You’ve made this a commentary on the tragic events unfolding right now

Thanks, Neil. It’s not what I had in mind at first, but it just sort of wrote itself.

Dear Linda,
If only we could focus more on what we agree on and appreciate our differences there might one day be world peace. Lovely and sensual piece. Now I’m hungry. 😉

As I said a few comments ago: If the pols would mind their own and just do their jobs, we’d be a lot better off.

That is the beautiful part of living (or visiting) a cosmopolitan city, isn’t it? You get a feel of so many cultures all within walking distance.

And, without the interference of politics, getting along pretty well.

Amen, and for the most part, I can tell you, as New Yorker, that it is truth.

We can do it – get along peacefully – until we can’t. What a puzzle human beings are. A clue to the answer is in your closing lines. Succinctly and powerfully described here.

Timely and a good story. Problem? Did everyone who was hungry have money to try out all those goodies. Give them out free? Nobody has money for all those goodies.

Not everyone, probably, but most of them would have planned to buy something in the street stands and had enough cash to do so. Those who didn’t had to get by on the fumes, I guess 🙂

Yes, the world is getting smaller every day. Decent people live decent lives and that is how it should be.
