Did anyone else have to look this one up?  I’ve never consciously heard the word before, but I had correctly guessed that it’s just all about vegetables.

But wait!  There is another meaning, which I find quite interesting:

EMBRYOLOGY
of or relating to that pole of the ovum or embryo that contains the less active cytoplasm, and frequently most of the yolk, in the early stages of development.
“vegetal cells.” Cells that are kind of just resting while they get ready to get growing with the rest of the embryo.
So I’ve already learned something today.  Cool.

Same here. I guessed the vegetable tie-in, but had to look it up anyway and I knew nothing about the embryogenesis polarity meaning.

Definitely got my money’s worth out of today’s word. 😀

  2. When I saw the prompt my mind immediately went to Vegemite, which reminded me of a Brit I used to date.

Growth in waiting – like the garlic bulbs I’m about to plant now, which will wait patiently beneath the winter soil until spring.

    1. Nice example. My mother-in-law used to have the most gorgeous tuberous begonias, which she dug up every year, wrapped with TLC, and kept in a dark corner of the basement during the winter. Growth-in-waiting. I like that.
