Not a Fashionista

New Sensation

Ah, sweet youth. No matter whether you grew up sporting a fedora, penny loafers, poodle skirts, bell-bottoms, leg-warmers, skinny jeans, Madonna-inspired net shirts and rosaries, goth garb, a spikey mohawk, or even a wave that would put the Bieber to shame, you made a fashion statement, unique to you. Describe your favorite fashions from days of yore or current trends you think are stylin’.

Growing up, I mostly wore hand-me-downs.  Not a lot of fashion going on there.  Then, when I was about 14, a friend who sewed beautiful, stylish clothes for her daughter gave me a whole wardrobe of things her daughter had outgrown. I was in heaven!  They were stylish, and I wore them all through high school and into college.  By that time, of course, they weren’t all that stylish any more, but I still loved them.

Hippies were stylesetters in my late high school and college years. No, thanks.

Um.  No. Especially the head wreath. And the see-through.  Just no.

Then I got married and started having our family.  Four pregnancies put me waaaaay out of the stylish range and into the shapeless society of sisters. For a while.

When I was somewhere between 30 and 40, I discovered clothes that were designed for women with more to love.  I became keenly aware of what was right for my short, stocky shape, and how to dress in the colors that were best for me.  Changed my whole approach to shopping and sewing.  I learned that if I wore my correct palette, I would feel terrific and get lots of compliments.  Balm to a fat woman’s soul.

Maybe not the orange or the brown, but the red?  Yes!

I don’t pay a great deal of attention to fashion, never have.  I know what works for me, and I stick with it.  Fashion changes seasonally, and I just don’t have deep enough pockets to keep up with it.  Some of it is just ugly, anyway, and only the super-thin, super-tall, legs-to-her-earlobes models can really pull it off.  I have short stumpy legs.  There are some things I just can’t wear.

I used to wish I could get every new fad that hit the fashion scene, but that was when I was maybe 14-15.  I see pictures in magazines now and then, and pass right on by because most of what I see would look ridiculous on me.

I have a great sense of the ridiculous, but I’m not willing to translate that into my wardrobe 🙂
