Daily Prompt: Junk Food Junkie

(What’s your biggest junk food weakness? Tell us all about it in its sugary, salty, glory.)

Hoo boy. This one could be embarrassing.

I love junk food.  (Have you ever considered that, “junk food,” and realized what an oxymoron it is?)  You name it:  burgers, fries, milk shakes, fries, ice cream, fries, onion rings, fries, soda, fries. . . .are you seeing a theme here?

I know someone who likes her fries with a chocolate shake.  Sweet and salty.  I like mine with lots of salt, maybe a little ketchup.

My first memory of french fries goes back about 60 years, when it was a HUGE treat to go to the A&W. Cute little nickle mugs of root beer–and you actually got quite a bit of root beer back then for just a nickle.  Sometimes the girl who took our order was on roller skates–the kind you clamped onto your shoes using a roller skate key.  When she came back, she had our food on a tray. Dad would roll his window to the right height for the girl to clamp the tray onto the glass and then rest its “feet” on the car door.

And then heaven came wafting into the back seat of the car as Dad passed our food back to us.  Hot burgers, hot fries, frosty root beer. I loved it all, but especially the fries.

Friday nights were our family nights for many years.  When we were home, Mom would fix hamburgers that we loaded with onions, tomato, pickles, and lettuce.  I learned later that those were called California burgers. She would put frozen french fries in the oven, and served them with the burgers.  Lots of ketchup with those. We often used TV trays and watched Walt Disney Presents, and the popular westerns of the day–Sugarfoot, Rawhide, Gunsmoke. Great stuff, entertaining and innocent, where the good guys always won the pretty girl and defeated the outlaws.

So now I’m seeing a theme here.  Amazing what you learn when you start stirring up the memory pot.  I connected those yummy fries with warm family times, relaxed times, times when we just kicked back and enjoyed some down time after a busy week.

I think I’ll get some fries for lunch.
