“Strange people,” Maisie thought. “At least they have a modern sink to make the washing up easy. Who would leave olives and jam sitting out on the sink? Have they been there since I was last here? I wonder if the jam has been opened.”
She reached across the sink, grabbing the jam jar. Glad she’d been wearing her rubber gloves, she gripped the jar and twisted the lid.
The most awful stench ever hit her like a slap in the face. Feeling dizzy, she screwed the lid back on.
“I need a new job. “
Dealing with other people’s waste is a tough way to make a livijng

It’s surprising what some people just can’t seem to throw out 🙂

People are gross. Dealing with our own grossness is bad enough. Dealing with others’… ughk.

That’s right. My own messes don’t seem so bad compared to –well, anything that’s NOT my own mess 🙂

Dear Linda,
Oooh, that was cringe-worthy. Cleaning up other peoples’ messes isn’t fun.

Nope. I had a housecleaning job when I was in college. Believe me, some of the messes I dealt with were indeed cringe-worthy!

I can well imagine her distaste. One thing to clear your own refrigerator out, with all that may reveal, but quite another when it’s someone else’s mess.

Sounds like a hazardous occupation.

Oh dear. Best not to open any more jars in that house 🙂

She faced professional hazard. Did she have to open the bottle and smell it?

Maybe not, but a good maid would want to know if there was something that needed to be tossed out. Or maybe she was just curious 🙂

It’s bad enough to have to clean up my own stuff, let alone someone else’s. She certainly needs a new job.

Indeed. I have a couple of friends who clean houses as a business. It’s hard work, and I don’t think I could do it. Well, I KNOW I couldn’t at this stage of life 🙂

That’s always a major risk for anyone who works in others’ homes

Ouch… I can only guess how it looked with a smell like that… but maybe they just try to do some biological warfare

One needs a strong stomach to do that job! I like the voice of this piece. The stench, however… 😉

I wonder if there’s a maid anywhere who gets paid enough. Kind of like waiters and waitresses. If it weren’t for the tips, they’d be broke all the time. We do tend to undervalue the service people we take for granted.

I have heard some rich families being generous but I’d say it’s rare. These jobs are a modern form of slavery.
