Cassie’s eyes, the same blue as the icy water below, sparkled with excitement. It was her first solo mission in her beloved Cessna 172! The weather was perfect, with no strong winds or ominous clouds. Alone in her little four-seater, she would return with precious cargo.

Five hundred miles north, Amka cradled her sleeping newborn. They had named her Uki, Survivor. Premature, she needed special care for her under-developed lungs. Cassie was their only hope.

The village listened for the plane’s engine. Reports from the radio shack encouraged them.

All for the life of one tiny baby.

I have to apologize. I just didn’t get to read everyone’s stories last week. Usually I read every single one, but for some reason I’m having trouble focusing on my usual routine. I don’t think I can blame it on jet lag any more 🙂 Maybe I’m just homesick for my kids and grandkids, and I really do love it in England. Anyway, I promise to try to do better this week.

  3. Beautiful story. Makes me think of my Inuit friend whose baby was born one month after mine with a heart defect and was medevaced to Montreal from Pangnirtung. We became friends in the Children’s hospital… 23 years ago.

    1. I would love to have looked up several of you who claim England as home 🙂 It was so beautiful! We headquartered in Islip, a little village near Oxford. We made several trips to various sites, and I really don’t know if there were any near Worcester. I wasn’t in charge, thank goodness! So please don’t be cross:) We visited Blenheim, Warwick, Avebury, spent a couple of days in Oxford, and more I love your country. For me, a teacher of English and history, a lover of Jane Austen, Charles Dickens, and more, i t was like going to my dream world.

Glad you had a great time, i guess you had our wonderful weather, Oxford is a beautiful place and the cotswolds on your doorstep too, I work sometimes in the Cotswolds, Worcester isn’t a million miles away, birthplace of Elgar and next to that Malvern where Tolkien honed his writing. Theres so much to see!!
