“Why do the most beautiful seasons of the year carry this horrible stuff that makes me so miserable? Spring and fall, I sneeze until I just want to die! Pollen! Awful stuff!” And Violet sneezed again into her already soggy tissue. Her eyes watered, her head ached, her sinuses dripped.
“Well, I suppose we could find a desert and go live where there isn’t any pollen. I hear there aren’t as many allergens, for instance, in the deserts of Utah or Arizona.”
“Oh but then I’d miss my beautiful roses!”
“Right. I’ll get more tissue.”
Into every life a little pollen must fall

Dear Linda,
I guess you have to put up with the pollen if you’re going to stop to smell the roses. 😉 This made me chuckle. Well done.

Rochelle

As a (mild) sufferer I’m with her – it’s worth the snot for the warm sunshine and the colours and smells!

Ha! Very good. And there are always allergy medicines – worth it to keep seeing those flowers. Lovely

There is always a price to pay for beauty. Snotty tissues being one. Great story!

I actually find the desert to be beautiful… it’s all in the eye of the beholder though.

And contrary to popular belief, there are dozens on allergens there–some brought from the north when snow birds insist on planting grass 🙂

This was a fun piece, Linda. The price so many people pay to smell the roses… I, thankfully, am not one of the sufferers!

Linda, this was very true to life and so often when you hear someone complaining about something, they really have no intention to change the situation but they do need to vent…and possibly taken Claratine.
Funny you should mention sinus problems because I’ve had the most dreadful headache for the last two days and my eyeballs ached along with my face and head. It’s been excruciating. I didn’t know what was going on until I blew my nose and an alien flew out. That was pretty scary too. Back onto antibiotics and I’m not dying after all.
Hope you have a great weekend.
Best wishes,
Rowena

Haha! So she stays with her roses and pollen and soggy tissue.

Funny twist there — she wants to have it both ways, it seems, and hey, doesn’t everybody?

But of course! Thanks, Joy.

Seasonal allergy can be so disabling. A truly pragmatic take.

Oh the arid air of the desert! I honestly don’t know which is worse. We do have roses here, too!

So true! Fortunately since it rains almost constantly these days the pollen count is always quite low 😦

Itchy eyes is what gets me. The worst attacks happen when I’m on the boat running up the river. Do you think it stops me from fishing? Not on your life.

Pollen, I was not aware that different people respond to different pollens. I like the moral of the story where we accept some failings for the pleasures of life.

It’s true. My husband is strongly allergic to cats–literally gets sick from the dander. Dogs? No problem. And I don’t react to either one. Allergies are strange things. Thanks for the comment, James.

Linda, I love this. It makes me think that we must suffer for beauty. 🙂

I love this, it makes a great analogy for things in life we complain about but can’t live without.
Funny and thought-provoking at the same time.

Violet’s suffering comes across so well. I don’t think she would bloom in a desert, better her regular sore nose. Very well told.
