PHOTO PROMPT © Fatima Fakier Deria
Yesterday, the calm of a busy harbor marina. Smooth, blue water. Small boats, big ships, Industry, pleasure, business and play all unaware that a change was coming.
Today: The air, still calm, doesn’t give fair warning. In fact, there was very little warning of any kind. Only those who happened to be looking out to sea noticed a strange new line of darker blue on the horizon, growing higher and moving faster as it rolled toward their peaceful bay.
So terrifying, so relentless. So careless of anything in its path.
And afterward? Calm, and sorrow.
Dear Linda,
The calm before and after the storm. Well done.
Shalom,
Rochelle

The tone and descriptions of every part of your story is just perfect. I feel myself relaxing with the first paragraph, anxiety took me in the second paragraph, and by the end… the loss is palpable.

A terrifying experience to be caught up in. Nature can be so cruel and powerful, as well as benign and beautiful.

I so enjoyed the contrasts in your story. Peace and calm then the violence of the storm. Well done.

The build- up of tension and anxiety, just like the weather, is great. I like this.

I too loved the circle of the calm before and after the storm. Nicely done.

This was really well written. I’ve always been amazed at the calm after the storm. It’s like the weather is pretending innocence. “What me? No, I’m calm and sunny, I’d never do anything like that.”

I liked this until the last line. IDKY..just me I suppose but it certainly made me think and anytime you can stimulate the reader beyond the 100 words I believe you can claim success!

Maybe because it wasn’t a happy ending? Anyway, thanks for commenting, and I believe you’re right. Many of these stories set my imagination in motion when we’re left dangling. I enjoy that.

caught unaware by a tsunami. I still can’t get the images out of my mind of the big one that hit a few years ago. I can only imagine the horror when the sudden realization hit them head-on.

I think a tsunami is one of the most terrifying of nature’s storms. The lack of warning makes it like a sneak thief.

Tsunami was the first thing that came to my mind when I saw the FF photo prompt. This is such a wonderful take on the prompt. I specifically loved the way you used the word ‘calm’ to denote both peace and the aftermath of destruction.

Thanks. It surprised me, as I read the other posts, that no one else saw the tsunami coming 🙂

Ha ha! I did not write about the tsunami as well, although the thought came to my mind at first.
