Someday

****************

Miriam sat in her rocker, her knitting on her lap. Her gaze rested on the children playing on her front porch; her precious grandchildren, who were unquestionably the most beautiful, intelligent, charming children in the world. It made her smile to watch them and listen to their chatter.

Olivia, Ava, Mia, Isabella. All four girls were within a few months of each other in age. They were first cousins, all bearing a strong family resemblance. Miriam, out of curiosity, had looked up popular girl names, and found all four of their names up at the top of the list. How different from the names 20 or 30 years ago!  They actually seemed a little old-fashioned to Miriam, but then everything did tend to go in cycles.

They were four years old, all of them, and they were busy with their dolls. They had set up a tea party using doll dishes that had belonged to Miriam when she was a child. It gave her great delight to see the girls using her old toys.

Miriam stopped rocking so she could hear the girls’ conversation.

“Well, Miss Ava, what do you want to be when you grow up?” inquired Isabella.

“Someday, I want to be a mommy and a teacher,” replied Ava. “Like my mommy.”

“Someday I’m going to marry a doctor and be a nurse,” piped up Mia.

“Someday I’M going to be the DOCTOR , and my husband can be the nurse,” stated Isabella.

“Men can’t be nurses, Silly,” pronounced Ava. “Men are doctors and women are nurses.”

“Not in my family.  Daddy’s brother is a nurse,” said Isabella. “Someday, everybody can be ‘zackly what they want.”

Olivia had been quiet during this exchange. She was usually the quietest of the four, waiting until she thought about it before she spoke.

“I don’t know what I’ll be,” stated Olivia. “I don’t think we’re big enough to know yet. I think we have to go to school and stuff before we make up our minds.”

“Well, someday I really, really want to be a doctor,” said Isabella.

“Why?” asked Ava.

“Because doctors get to be the boss!”  pronounced Olivia.
