This Is Your Life
If you could read a book containing all that has happened and will ever happen in your life, would you? If you choose to read it, you must read it cover to cover.
Since I can’t imagine anyone else would be willing to read a whole book detailing my life, I also can’t imagine I would want to read it. After all, I was there. What I don’t remember from my first two or so years I’ve heard enough about to have a pretty clear picture. After that, memory is vivid.
I have clients who tell me they really don’t remember much at all about their childhoods, eve up into the teen years. I find that hard to understand. Some of them, of course, are blocking really horrible memories, and that’s a different kettle of fish.
Anyway, no, I don’t think I’d read the story of my life unless I didn’t know it was about me; unless the author omits all humiliating, shameful, and embarrassing moments that I don’t care to remember; unless the author is sympathetic to me.
I don’t ask for much 🙂
