It’s All About . . . .Not Me :)

These Horns Were Made for Tooting

Today, share something you love about yourself  — don’t be shy, be confident! — but that few other people know about you or get to see very often.

********************

So, we talkin’ physical here?  Emotional? Intellectual?  Spiritual?  I mean, there are so many different ways to take this. And besides all that, it’s pretty deeply ingrained in most of us not to think more highly of ourselves than we ought to think (Romans 3:12).  So that thought right there triggers something I offer a lot of people in my counseling office.

We hear a lot today about self-esteem.  Truth is, there’s way to much self-esteem floating around out there. That’s why killing police officers has become a pastime for certain elements in our society. They think way too highly of themselves. But, lest I take off on a rant, I will rein myself in and go back to what got triggered.

We need to understand that we are of inestimable value to God. Okay, for those of you who don’t believe in God or don’t want a devotional lecture right now, you’re probably checking out.  I wish you wouldn’t, because it really helps to know that you are precious to the God Who created you.

Colossians 1:16 tells me that God made me for Himself. Really?  Why?  Well, He wanted fellowship. Of all His creation, the human being is the only one created in His own image. He wanted someone to talk with, to enjoy. That would be you and me.

Ephesians 2:10 tells me that I am His workmanship, His masterpiece. How cool is that? The next time I look in the mirror and feel bad about the lines around my mouth and my saggy baggy neck skin, I’ll try to remember that He spent a lot of time making me into a thing of beauty, just for Himself. Age is not equivalent to ugly. It’s just a different kind of gorgeous 🙂

Psalm 139 tells me that I am a miraculous work of God, awesomely and wonderfully made. It says that He knew every single thing about me before I was ever conceived. And I have to make the leap, from there, that He loved me so much that He allowed His Son, Jesus Christ, to suffer and die and then arise from death so that I could be with Him forever in heaven. That’s love. He loves me more than my human mind can understand.

Finally, Jeremiah 29:11-14 tells me that God actually thin!ks about me!  I could spend a lot of time just pondering that amazing fact.  Not only does He think about me, but His plans for me are for good, not to harm me.  His plans for me are that I have a hope and a future, and then He says that if I truly seek Him, I will be found of Him.

So here’s something  most people probably don’t know about me.  I have a lot of insecurities. I hate being fat. I hurt physically, often, but I try not to let it be the only thing I talk about. I sometimes suffer from deep remorse over sin that has already been forgiven, but that still shames me when the memory creeps up on me. See, Satan always knows just where to stick his nasty self into my weak spots, and I have plenty of them.  I am keenly aware of my inadequacies.

When I’m feeling lower than a snake’s belly, that’s when I go to God and ponder on those passages I just shared with you. I pray. I find uplifting music to enjoy. And God always gets the victory, because He is Truth, and Satan is a liar.

  1. The thing that gets between me and God or me and you, and even gets in my way – is me. I do think some people have low self-esteem; however, the human ego can use whatever we throw at it to make us self-centered. Self-centered driven egos believe they are entitled. The lies we tell ourselves feel like truth to some people, who don’t know any better (and some who do). It all started in the Garden of Eden. Enough from me on this…

I wasn’t going to sign into WordPress, because I have things to do right now. I haven’t been blogging regularly, so I decided to check out the Writing Prompt, which I almost never use (and didn’t today). When I read your post, I had to sign in. Psalm 139 is my favorite part of all Scripture. Whenever I feel I am moving away from God, that psalm reminds me that He is always with me and He knows me intimately.

    Nicely said!
P.S. I almost never ever talk about my faith online. You got me 🙂
