Let Them Eat Cake!

The Fun Platform

If you were the new leader of your country and had the chance to transform something that’s currently an annoyance (or worse) into a very fun activity, what would it be? How would you go about the change, and why would you choose that particular thing?

*****************

Oh, I am so ready for this one today, because of an article I read online earlier this morning: http://conservativetribune.com/pictures-shocking-pictures-comparing-us-school-lunches-to-other-countries-goes-viral/

I usually take these sensationalistic articles with a grain of salt, but there have been so many similar articles in the past few months, all documented with photos, that I believe every word of this one. The articles are sometimes written by disgusted parents, sometimes by disgusted school cooks, teachers and principals, and sometimes by hungry kids.

So, here’s what I would change:  Going to lunch at school is something to be dreaded these days. The food is unappetizing, skimpy, and icky to look at. The fix is simple.  Go back to letting the schools figure out their own menus, based partly on what they know the kids will eat.

But isn’t that going to be wasteful?

No more wasteful than now. Schools are reporting having to throw out literally tons of uneaten food.  Money in the dumpster. It’s absurd.

And to even things up, I’d arrange for a daily dose of the present meals to be sent to Michelle and her family.  I’m sure they’d enjoy that,  since she’s so concerned with childhood obesity, saving money, improving nutrition. Perfect solution, yes?

  1. I work at the school cafeteria in our school we don’t serve that kind of lunches that you picture it. Maybe in another state but not in North Dakota. Still kids just want to eat sweets and fast foods and not healthy food. Very sad for the waste but parents needs to educate their children.

    1. Are your menus in line with the governmanet guidelines? I’m sure there are schools who are working to meet the guidelines and still provide a pleasing lunch. And you are right–the eating habits they learn at home will guide their choices at school. However– I, for sure, do NOT want the government sticking its nose into my home kitchen!

  2. We meet the food guidelines also the food is homemade. We have delicious recipes. I know not everyone does the right thing but at least I can said I’m proud to cook the school lunch. today’s lunch super nachos and tomorrow Meatloaf & Mash Pot & Gravy. Yes, I do understand your point about the Government deciding what to eat.
