Jell-O Disaster

This is probably ten years ago, and the story doesn’t go with this particular Jell-o creation, but there is another funny story that  the picture will help to illustrate.

Forty-five years ago, a new bride, I was doing lots of experimenting in the kitchen.  I enjoyed it, and Terry and i both enjoyed having people come to eat with us.

One night, he invited his old roommate from college, who happened to be living not too far away.  Bob was a very cool guy, lots of fun to be around.

I had made a Jell-o salad very similar to the one you see above. The only difference was that it was in a crown mold, like this :

It was a work of art.  I had spent quite a bit of time putting it together.  There were three layers, different colors.  The little layer on top had cream cheese in it.

In order to get the Jell-o out of the mold, I needed to set the mold upside down in lukewarm water for just a few seconds.  No problem, I was a pro by this time.  I filled one side of my kitchen sink with tepid water and carefully lowered the mold into the sink. After maybe ten seconds, I lifted the mold out of the sink. I had a plate waiting. I put the mold on the counter, placed the plate over the open side of the mold, and turned the whole thing upside down.  The mold came off easily with a sucking plopping sound, and we all gazed in appreciation at my shimmering masterpiece.

Until the top slid off into the sink, which caused the second layer to wobble and slide as well, and I was madly splashing in the warm water, trying to save something, anything!

Well, all that was left was the bottom layer of Jell-o and fruit.

And that story has followed me all these years, the whole family making jokes at every Christmas or Thanksgiving when I make the green Jell-o and cream cheese creation in the first picture.

“Careful, Mom!  Don’t get too close to the sink!”

  1. That sucking plopping noise.. such a great noise. Almost as good a noise as sucking the self-same jell-o through a straw. Now.. that is a noise my wife will smack me for making.. oh, wait til I teach my grandchildren that one (ok, fine, I have to have grandchildren first.. but.. still.. planning is in motion).

Jell-O creations remind me of the saying, “Life is too short to stuff a mushroom!”
They are beautiful, though. I admire your perseverance. Maybe I’ll try again and remember “the straw” just in case…either way, a reward of some sort!

    1. I only do them for Christmas, Thanksgiving, and Easter these days. When I was growing up, Jell-o was a common dessert, made with fruit like peaches or bananas and served with a dollop of whipped cream. Don’t know why I don’t do that more often, ’cause Terry loves it.
