We’ve all heard that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Do you agree? is all beauty contingent on a subjective point of view?
Oddly enough, the first thing that came to mind was NOT any face or feature. There are so many standards of human physical beauty around the world that it would be pretty hard to find one person who represents absolute beauty. After all, some think it beautiful to hang huge circles out of their noses or earlobes; others think it’s beauty to cover their bodies with all manner of inked designs, while still others stretch their necks with wooden rings until the results resemble a human giraffe.
The very first thing that came to my mind was this anthem to the beauty of the American nation. There’s something for everyone. Forests, mountains, rivers, lakes, deserts, rich farmland across the fruited plains. Weather? We’ve got it all, from desert-dry to rain forest.
We even have huge cities, for those who love them. Or we can offer remote, lonely hideaways where no one else will ever bother the one who wants not to see his neighbor’s smoke rising from the chimney.
I’ve traveled this country from coast to coast and border to border, and I’d be perplexed to tell you what parts I love the most. There is beauty in every kind of countryside. It’s exciting to approach the vast Rocky Mountain range. It’s relaxing to come home to the rolling green hills of Pennsylvania. It’s soul-satisfying to travel through the farmlands that sustain our nation, as well as other countries around the world. It’s amazing to see the thick forests of the northwest, with their towering, aromatic giants blocking the sun. It’s awe-inspiring to view the many waterfalls, from Niagara to Hawaii (I want to go there someday!)
Perhaps my favorite is the ocean. I love the ocean. And my favorite trip out on the ocean was the whale watch out of Bar Harbor, Maine, where two accommodating whales hovered for about 15 minutes very near our boat. It was as if they were giving a paid performance. We were in a “whale park,” where you could see spouts anywhere you looked, off on the horizon. I was simply overwhelmed to see these wonderful animals in their natural environment. So immense, such grace and power.
Yes, I think if I absolutely have to choose my favorite natural beauty, it would be the ocean.
God has blessed America.
